Golfing-Nor'Easter Style
We lucked out as far as weather goes on Saturday. The drive down to NC took a little longer than usual because A) it was the weekend and B) It was raining in VA. But we got down in time to attend the kids birthday parties. After the kids party we headed back to Mike and Audra's house so the kids could open the rest of their birthday gifts. We ate dinner, checked weather.com and saw the rain was well west and south of Raleigh, so we headed on over to Knights Play golf course to play golf under the lights ;minus Rachel's brother Jonathan, but that's another post in itself.
When we got their my father in law suggested we play holes number 19-27 to start out since none of us had ever played there. It seemed like a good idea, but once we started playing we saw why most people don't play 19-27. Most of the holes are very similar to one another, so there isn't much variety. 6 of the 9 holes fell in the 100-120 yard range. I hit my pitching wedge about 110-115 yards, so I had a lot of difficulty dialing it down to only go 100. Looking back, I probably should have just choked down a little and the ball would have gone a little shorter. Didn't think of that at the moment though. So a lot of the 1st nine I ended up flying the ball over the green. Finally by the time we got to the 5th hole which was also about 100 yards, I decided I was going to try to tee off using my 56 degree flop wedge. This lead to me having a US Open/Masters moment. I hot my tee shot and it goes way high, the wind grabs it, but it hits the front of the green. Since it was a flop wedge, I guess it had a lot of backspin on it, and the ball hit the green and backed up into the water!!!! DAGGER!!!!
I did much better on the 2nd set of 9 that we played. The highlight was on the 13th hole. It was a 176 yard shot, slightly uphill. I was last to go in our threesome. Mike goes and takes a big healthy cut and ends up hooking into the sand trap in the front left of the green. My father in law, using a 5 wood tops the ball and send it about 75-80 yards. So I get out my 4 iron hybrid and tee my ball up. My brother in law Mike says to me $10 if you knock it on. With the way the wind was blowing, I didnt think I had much of a chance. I get up and hit the ball towards the right side of the green, it looks long enough, but I think its too wide right. Then I don't know if it was the wind (aka gust from the gods), or if I put a slight draw on the ball, but the ball took a slight left turn and landed soft smack in the middle of the green. BOOOYAH!!!! I missed the birdie putt, but did make my par putt. Double Booyah!!!
I used a few of the balls I ordered from lostgolfballs.com. I gotta tell ya, I may never buy new golf balls again. I got a dozen Titleist NXT's along with a few others that I haven't tried yet. The balls I ordered were all 3rd quality. Looking at them, you can definitely tell that they weren't new. They didn't quite have that nice sheen a brand new ball has, but there were no dings or cuts on any of them. I really liked the NXT, I seemed to be hitting the ball really crisply when I used them. The cover they use on the NXT's is fairly soft too, so it has a nice feel to it. I used a Pinnacle on one of the holes with water on it, and it felt like I was hitting a rock in comparison. I definitely noticed a big difference in the feel at impact.
Overall it was a great time. My tee shots were all pretty good, my putting was just horrible. I 3 putted on just about every hole. The sweetest part was that about 30 minutes after we got back to Mike and Audras, the rain finally started. So it held out just long enough for us to get in 18!!!
