School Days...

So last night was my third week of class. The first week of class we had 6 people in my class, along with 2 translators for the deaf girl in my class. In week 2, we had 5 people along with the 2 translators. Last night, there were 3 of us. The deaf girl and another girl didn't show up. Last week was the last week you could drop a class and get a full refund, so I wonder if they dropped the class or if they were just sick. We started out with 3 students yesterday, and one of them had to leave to pick someone up at the airport. So the last 2 hours of class it was me, one other student and the professor. I can't really complain because with so few people, I get all my questions answered. I just miss seeing everyone elses work. The deaf girls work in particular was quite good. When I signed up for the class, I expected most of the students to be slightly older folks like me, who have been out of school for a while. But in actuality all the other students are like 19 years old. It's amazing how immature, naive and unpolished 19 year olds can be. I guess wisdom really does come with age. Being in that class makes me feel so old. I'd guess the professor and I are around the same age. I learned last night that she did her undergrad work at Dartmouth and got her masters in Australia. Also learned that she is a vegetarian. Since I've never met a vegetarian I can get along with, I'm a little nervous. But I guess I can handle just about anyone in small doses. We got our first assignment back yesterday and I got a 95 on it. Im pretty pumped. I wish I did this well when I was in school for real. The assignment we had to present this week seemed to be well received. The rubber duck and seagul photos they were especially fond of. I didn't end up using any of the wooden figures photos. I may use them and experiment with them at a later date. The assignment for this week is landscapes. Something I always liked, but haven't been particularly good at. I'm hoping I can learn some new tricks and improve at it. We looked through about 100 slides last night during class of different landscape photographers work. So I have to come up with 5 landscape shots for next class. Since it's usually dark when I get out of work, I'll be very busy this weekend trying to work in the daylight hours. The new show Medium continues to impress me. I highly recommend it. House is also quite awesome. We've fallen about 3 episodes behind though. Good thing for Tivo. There was a new show on this week on CBS called Numb3rs. I wasn't terribly impressed, but Rachel seemed to like it. Maybe it's my dislike of math and numbers that turned me off.

Movies...Movies...Movies...

With the weather being so cold and miserable over the weekend, I did what any indoorsman like myself does best. I spent a lot of time watching television. Normally when I watch a DVD, out of three movies, there will be one I really like. Well I lucked out this weekend. We watched three movies and loved all three.

The first movie we watched was Open Water. Now while this movie looked like someones home videos from their vacation, the story is just amazing. And having been on vacations where excursions like these happen, I can totally see what went on in the movie, happening again. A lot of scary movies put the characters in unbelievable situations. Where they are being chased by ghosts, or a meniacle serial killer. This movie doesn't do any of that, but it's still so scary because I could totally see myself in that situation. If you haven't seen the movie yet, try not to find out too much about it before you watch it. Going into it, all I really knew was that it was low budget and it had something to do about sharks. It was really fun seeing the storyline unfold.

The second movie was Ladder 49. Wow was this movie good. Again, I didn't really know details of the movie other than it was about fire fighters. One of the best movies I've seen in a long time. I'm a big fan of Rescue Me, and while Rescue Me often has some light hearted stuff in it, and can be goofy at times, Ladder 49 really shows how much sacrafice firemen and their families go through. Awesome movie.

After seeing a downer like Ladder 49, I thought it was time for a light hearted movie. I thought the movie would be really dumb, so I started watching it by myself while Rachel was at work. I got through about an hour and thought, wow this movie kicks ass and is really funny. So I stopped it and decided to watch it from the beginning with Rachel when she got home. So since the AFC Championship game was such a blowout and boring to watch, we popped in Harold and Kumar Go To White Castle. Holy shit is this movie entertaining. These two guys are like the new Cheech and Chong. I was so pumped because the ending left things WIIIIIDE OPEN for a sequel. The only aspect of the movie I found really bothersome was how they portrayed white people. Every white person they encountered was worst than the next. The movie is in no shape or form a deep movie, but we found it to be highly entertaining. It will forever change the way I think of Doogie H0wser, Battle Ship and special sauce.

I was also saddened to hear about the passing of Johnny Carson. While I was quite young when he was in his prime, I didn't truely appreciate or understand his comedy. His show was much more entertaining than what Jay Leno does now a days. While David Letterman is and will probably always be my favorite late night talk show host, I admire Johnny for his longevity and for shaping the late night talk show genre. Man when Letterman retires, I'm gonna be bummed.

Football...

So last weekend, I did a little better with my picks. The only one I got wrong was the Indy-New England game. And in my head I knew New England was the better team, but wishful thinking made me pick Indy. Its funny how in the first week of playoffs, the Rams won on the road, The Vikings came into Lambeu field and defeated the Packers and the Jets stunned the Chargers in San Diego. So the only team to win at home were the heavily favored Colts. This past week, all the home teams won. So it goes to show just how important that home field advantage can be.
So this week I"ll take the Patriots over the Steelers and the Falcons over the Eagles. Hopefully Michael Vick and the rest of the Falcons don't fall apart like the Colts do when they play outside of a dome.

Have a great weekend...

Rumble in Virginia...

I had an idea to do some cool ass karate action with bendable wooden dolls for my next project for class. The idea is to demonstrate depth of field. That's why certain aspects of the photos are out of focus. That is done intentionally...

Choker...

So on Saturday after Rachel got off from work, we drove over to Maryland to see my sister. We hadn't seen her since Thanksgiving, so we headed there to exchange Christmas gifts. On the way to her house it was 10-0 Pittsburgh over the Jets. I figured the Steelers, who on paper looked like a much better team than the Jets were going to crush them. Im out running some errands with my brother-in-law and I see its tied 10-10. We get back and eat dinner, after we eat I turn the game on it time to see the runback to put the Jets ahead. Wow the Jets are going to the AFC championship game? While I'm not a Jets fan, I'm much more of a Jets fan that I am a Steelers fan. I still don't understand what Herm Edwards was thinking at the end of regulation when he had Pennington take a knee and put them back another yard or two. Since Brien missed the fieldgoal by about half a foot, taking that knee made all the difference. I can't really blame Doug Brien for that first kick. It was a 47 yarder which is pretty tough, plus it was cold, windy and the pressure had to be intense. But the 2nd one he missed was just a plain and simple hook. Yikes. It makes you realize how rock solid guys like Adam Vinatieri are. To be able to kick field goals in such clutch times like he has is really amazing. He must have nerves of steel. I'm guessing the Jets will be looking for a new kicker, and perhaps a new head coach?

There are those who disagree with the US in Iraq, and I can understand why. But is President Bush really such a bad guy for wanting some stability and for promoting democracy in a part of the world that has been in utter turmoil and chaos for so very long? Aren't free elections a step in the right direction? I think the average person in Iraq wants stability and peace. It's these warmongers who want things to stay the same so they can continue to rule and lead by fear.

Tonight is my second class. Hopefully this class is a little more eventful than the 1st. Im curious to see what the others in my class come up with. See what kind of skillset I'm up against. I have this competive side, where I always want to be one up on the competition.

We watched that show Medium again last night and it was another really good episode. 24 was awesome as well. Eventually the show is going to grow old, but for now each season they seem to get a little more creative and they manage to keep things fresh.

I read that the author of Silence of the Lambs, Red Dragon and Hannibal is coming out with a new novel this fall. It covers Hannibal's childhood and early teen years. Almost sounds like the new Star Wars. Where you get to see what turns a good person bad. Im a big fan of the other books/movies so hopefully this one won't disapoint. Sometimes the premise of a story doesn't live up to the hype.

This weeks assignment

I had problems thinking of stuff to shoot for my assigmnet this week for school. The teacher wanted us to shoot 36-48 exposures and pick our favorite 5. Here's what I have so far. My favorite is the bear. Hopefully next weeks assignment will be a little more specific.

Football Pickin's

Since I did so stellar last week going 1-3, I'll give it another go and see if I can redeem myself. Im torn with a few games this week. For instance, the Jets-Steelers game. I want the Jets to win, but the Steelers are just so good. And I would love to see the Colts knock pretty boy Tom Brady on his ass and send them home in front of the home Foxborough fans. But New England is a juggernaut. For Peyton Manning, Im sure it was fun setting the single season TD record, but it's about time for Peyton to put on his big boy pants and make it to the Super Bowl. And with the Eagles, I haaaaate the Eagles. But the Vikings are just so inconsistant, it's hard to have any faith in them. The only game I am 100% sure about who I want to win is the Falcons. And to be honest, if I didn't have Atlanta in my office football pool, I probably wouldn't even watch this game.

So my picks for the week are:

Indianapolis to de-thrown New England
Pittsburgh over the Jets
Philly over the Vikings
Falcons soaring over the Rams

So I get my drums last night. UPS shows up around 6:00. I take the stuff downstairs, and Rachel and I head out to dinner. When we get back, I begin assembling the kit. Man it was a lot tougher than I thought putting this thing together. The kick pedal for the bass drum was like a Rubicks cube for me. Luckily Rachel figured that out. If it weren't for her, I probably still wouldn't have it together. So I played a little while just to get a feel for the set and headed upstairs to take a shower and go to bed. I take a shower, turn on Letterman and get into bed. Rachel falls asleep, Im pretty wide awake so I begin reading the drum processor book. I read about a few neat features and I head back downstairs to try them out. I hook my Ipod up to the AUX port on the processor and I begin to rock out with Nirvana, Audioslave, Metallica and yes, Cinderella. Next thing I know, I walk out and look at the clock and it's 1:15 AM. Yikes!!! So needless to say when the alarm went off this morning, I was not a happy camper. But I have three days after today to recover. Whoohoo. Love three day weekends.

Wango Tango

So this morning on the drive into work the local radio station is talking about the upcoming innaugriation. And one of the featured acts is the Motor City Madman, Ted Nugent. So they interview Ted over the phone and man, you gotta love Ted. I've always admired Ted for his passion and gusto towards life. Talk about a guy living every day to it's fullest. So Ted is talking about hunting and why he finds it so fascinating. And he kept using this term which I just loved and I think I sort of understand. He said hunting and being out in nature gave him a "spiritual erection".

I remember when I was out in Colorado three years ago we went to Pikes Peak. On the drive up, we stopped at a scenic overlook around the timberline. Even though it was May and 90 degrees down at city level, up at 10,000 feet or so there was still snow on the ground. So I got out of the rental car and I just started running through the snow. I don't know what came over me, but I just had this weird spiritual sort of experience. I ran for a good two or three minutes into the woods. Jumping over rocks, splashing through puddles, and traversing small dips and breaks in the earth. Then I came across some big paw prints in the snow and decided I should probably head back. The thought of a mountain lion eating me for dinner quickly shrunk my spiritual erection. I think I may need to run through the woods near my house this weekend. I could use a good spiritual erection.

Back to School

So tonight is my first class. I'm a little nervous since I haven't been to school in so long, but as long as I don't run into any bullies trying to take my lunch money I should be fine.

So when will the rest of the world be sending the US money to help the people impacted by the mudslides in California? Oh right, they won't be sending any money. Thanks.

Rachel was stuck at inventory on Sunday night, so we missed the premier of 24. So we had dinner and started a 4 hour marathon last night. We got a few phone calls in the middle of the viewing, but managed to make it through all four hours. This season looks like a good one. The premise. A group from Turkey living on US soil kidnaps the Secretary of Defense and his daughter. They threaten to put the secretary of defense on trial for crimes against humanity and broadcast it across the internet. There is also a mysterious briefcase that keeps getting passed around. I suspect it's some sort of dirty bomb. Great stuff. In 4 hours of the show, there's been two kidnappings, several gun fights, an explosion, and a robbery at gun point. Wahoo...

So I ordered my drum kit. It should be here by Friday. A 3 day weekend to drum my ass off. WOOHOO!!!! Look out Lars!!! Look out Tommy Lee. There's a new drummer in town. So yeah, it will only be a matter of days before there is so sort of Mp3, jpg or mpeg video of me playing the drums here on the blog. hehe playing the drums badly that is.

Howard Stern had James Brown and his wife on his show this morning. Man that James Brown is one wacky kat. Highly entertaining, which explains why he has a new reality show on VH1. He has the craziest laugh I've ever heard. He does this loooooong windup. Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa hahhhhaaaaaaa!!!! It was great. He did it like 10 times during the interview and I found myself immitating him in my car. Luckily it's winter and my windows were up.

Football and Whitey....

Even though my predictions from Friday left me 1 for 4, I'm glad to see the Jets make it to the next round. They will have their hands full against Pittsburgh, but hey, stranger things have happened. Quite a few of the Steelers haven't played in a few weeks, so they could be a little rusty. What I wasn't happy about was Minnesota beating up on Green Bay. What made me even more unhappy about Minnesota winning is the manner in which they did it. Randy Moss is the poster child for what is wrong with professional athletes. The guy has amazing talent and natural ability. But depending on which side of the bed he wakes up on, he can either go out there and give 110% or he could could just drag his feet and not do a whole lot all game. It's sad when people with so much talent, choose to be lazy like that. Plus I was upset to see Brett Favre lose. He's one of my favorites, and I think with all the frustration and hardships he has gone through the past few years, he may call it quits.

So on friday night Rachel and I went to see White Noise. For me, the movie doesn't really live up to the hype. It's not a bad movie, but it's very slow in the beginning and gets very repetitive. There aren't a lot of elements to the story. And man has Michael Keaton gotten old looking. Hard to believe he used to be Batman. Part of the problem with the movie is all the stupid kids going to see it. I know I was once a stupid kid, and I'm still pretty stupid at times, but I don't think I ever ruined a persons movie going experience by talking, laughing and screaming.

On a brighter note, we got around to watching the DVD of Standing Tall. While this was no Oscar winning film, it was very entertaining. I hate to say it, but the Rock is one kick ass action star. I hope he doesn't take the route of Vin Diesel. While sitting through the 30 minutes of commercials and trailers for White Noise, we saw a trailer for this new Vin Diesel movie due out in the spring. It's basically Vin Diesel's Kindergarden Cop. Except he's an ex special forces guy assigned to protect a family. So they have him doing the whole changing dirty diapers, getting thrown up on thing. How soon before he stars with a wacky sidekick like Jimmy Kimmell in a holiday film similiar to Jingle All the Way. And more importantly, how soon before he runs for governor of California? I mock the movie here, but watch it make $100 million dollars when it's released. I can see horny moms taking their kids to see the movie.

It's kind of neat when all the Christmas stuff is put away. I feel like my house has doubled in size. It's amazing how much extra space there is when I don't have to walk around giant nutcrackers, a dancing Mickey Mouse and a 8 foot Christmas tree. It didn't take long for stores to rip down the Christmas decorations and go right to Valentines day. Stupid Hallmark holidays. If it were up to Hallmark, people would send thank you notes, to thank people for sending THEM a thank you note. Thank YOU for thanking ME for the thank you note!!!

Let's Go Falcons!!!

With the Giants out of the playoffs, and the Jets standing a snowballs chance in hell of making it to the Super Bowl, I am for the next month or so, a Falcons fan. Every year at work, we each thrown in $50 and draw a name of a team in the playoffs out of a hat. At first I was a little upset that I got the Falcons. But now looking at the state of the NFC, I think they have a good shot at making it to the Super Bowl. With the injury to Terrell Owens, I think the Eagles with struggle. They won't have the Giants and Redskins to push around anymore. And without T.O. teams with just double cover Todd Pinkston and blitz more to contain Westbrook. T.O. being out there made everyone else on the Eagles offense that much better. Without him I don't see the Eagles going very far. The team that could send the Falcons home are the Packers. Whenever Brett Favre is in a game, magical things seem to happen. So one never knows. I don't think any of the NFC teams will be able to beat the top AFC teams. I think New England has to be the favorite just because they have been there before, whereas Ben Roethlesberger is still wet behind the ears and the Colts just don't jave the kind of defense that can get you to a Super Bowl. I guess in a few weeks, we'll see how right or wrong I am.

This week I like the Seahawks over the Rams, The Chargers over the Jets. The Colts over Denver and the Packers over Minnesota.

So the Yankees finally have Randy Johnson. Im happy, but not overly optimistic. His age and longevity scare me. But better to see him on the Yankees rather than pitching for the Red Sox or other rival. Rachel already purchased tickets to a few Yankees games when they come down to Baltimore. So I hope I get to see the Big Unit pitch. One of my favorite moments was seeing Roger Clemens pitch down in Ledgends Field during a spring training game. Seeing a power pitcher perform in person is a lot more intense live. At home, watching on TV, you don't get a real appreciation of how fast the ball gets to home plate. Plus since Ledgends Field is tiny, I was a lot closer to the field. So I could really hear the ball pop.

Watched a new show on NBC Monday night called Medium. Along with the new Fox show called House, these are my two new favorite shows of the year. I don't know if Medium has enough elements to be a successful show, but the first show was really interesting. Watching CSI last night, I have a new appreciation for that show. CSI Miami and New York just don't come close. The characters on the original CSI are all unique with their own demons, and likable qualities. The characters on the other CSI's just come off as pompous, trying to be overly cool, know it alls.
And I think they overdue the NY accents a little too much. fuhgettaboutit!!!
